We love book jacket designs, especially those retro paperbacks form the 50s and 60s, so we were so happy to discover the Picture Book, which lets you mount your favourite books for everyone to admire in its own specially made wall frame.
To fit books up to 20mm thick, and from 110mm x 180mm up to 122mm x 190mm.
MaterialsThe PictureBook frames are made from 70% FSC pine and 30% low-formaldehyde MDF from reclaimed off-cuts. The fixings and finishings are solvent-free paint, metal staples, air hardening filler, and PVA wood glue.
The FSC certification ensures that the wood has come from a sustainably managed forest, helping protect and promote wildlife habitats and eco systems.
PeopleAs part of the FSC programme, working conditions, working hours and levels of pay are regularly inspected to make sure employees are treated fairly and work in safe conditions.
The carpentry for the frames is done in a small, commercial workshop run by the charity, ‘St Mungo's’, helping raise funds for the organisation’s work with the homeless. The workshop is mainly staffed by hostel residents, giving them access to training, and the experience of structure and responsibility.
The frame is then filled, sanded, primed and painted in South-East London.
Resources The South-East London workshop where the PictureBook is finished is run with ‘green’ electricity.
TransportationMade from European timber, manufactured by St Mungo’s workshop and finished by Loglike on a small scale in London, UK. Distributed to One Eco Home London, UK. Transport is by ship and road.
PackagingThe PictureBook is packaged with hand-printed, reclaimed corrugated cardboard, tissue paper, natural latex and rubber bands. Transportation packaging is all pre-used.
Care instructions
Wall mount your PictureBook, or place it in a safe position where it won’t get knocked over, such as a shelf or bookcase. If you leave it freestanding, pick up from the side, rather than the top, to avoid repeatedly straining the joinery.
PictureBook has been designed for ease of repair. If damaged, the natural timber can be repaired with wood glue, and the surface easily repainted. The paint finish can be wiped clean with a damp, lint-free cloth wrung out in a weak solution of ‘earth-friendly’ surface cleaner. Dry with a soft cloth. Don’t let water stand on the paint finish, or it may cause marks.
The main ingredient is wood and the finish is non-toxic, water-based paint, making the PictureBook easy to recycle or biodegrade.
