MaterialsThe World of Books.com sell second hand books which they receive from the British Heart Foundation charity. 25% of the books they receive cannot be sold as no-one will buy them, which is approximately 10,000 a week. Presently these books have to be land filled which is costly and detrimental to the environment. The light reading lamp shade is made from 90% reused books with 10% steel fittings.No finishes have been applied to the final shade and any potential VOCs associated with the books’ printing inks will have diminished long before the books were turned into a shade. PeopleThis shade is made by a small UK based new designer.
Resources Use energy saving light bulbs to maintain a low temperature near the books while reducing energy consumption.
TransportationAll the books are sourced from the south east of England. The steel comes from the UK and is manufactured for the light fitting in a workshop in Shoreditch. The shade is made Hackney, London. All transportation is by road.
PackagingThe shade is packaged in cardboard and newspaper. Please make sure you reuse or recycle this.
Care instructionsThe books may need replacing every 5-7 years. The designer will supply a free replacement book if necessary and you can easily change the books by undoing a simple bolt fixing.
