Grass furniture? We know it sounds like a surrealist artwork, but that’s exactly what you see here. Wheat straw and bamboo, both grasses, are used to make a strong and durable fibre-board material, and even better they’re renewable.
MaterialsThis furniture piece is made from 85% wheat straw, 5% bamboo, and 10% metal.Using a fast growing grass such as wheat straw relieves pressure on timber supplies. Straw is an agricultural waste product that is annually renewed. Bamboo is a fast growing species which is harvested after 5-6 years leaving the root system intact for further stem growth.
The Grass cabinet and table contains no formaldehyde as would a veneered MDF. The finish is natural vegetable oil and wax. There is a small amount of solvent-free polyurethane adhesive edging bond which may contain trace VOCs, though less than with conventional adhesive.
Every part of the Grass range is suitable for reuse or composting. The designer is working with the Composting Association to certify the natural fibre boards suitable for agricultural compost under their accreditation scheme.
PeopleThe designer and manufacturer is a small business enterprise based in the UK.
Resources The aluminum and steel components have a proportion of recycled material which varies between batches but in the case of the aluminum is always higher that 50%. Both aluminum and steel can be easily recycled.
TransportationThe grass straw board is manufactured in China and is transported to the UK by road and sea. The aluminium components are made in Staffordshire. The natural wax and oil is from Germany. Production takes place in Norwich and London and is distributed from London by road.
Packaging100% of the packaging is suitable for home recycling. The packaging consists of 100% recycled paper board and polypropylene strapping.
Care instructionsIt meets the British and EU test for durability. Maintain by periodic surface polishing with a natural wax. This furniture is fully biodegradable.
