We are told by the designer that this light was inspired by a curled up wood louse (he is a boy and boys like creepy crawlies) but don't let that put you off! The Dillo light shade is made from sections of responsibly sourced birch-faced plywood, which are curved and slotted together to enhance the soft light of the energy saving light bulb inside.
MaterialsThe dillo is made from 90% PEFC certified birch faced plywood from Finland and 10% aluminum. The PEFC Council (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes) is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation that promotes sustainably managed forests through independent third party certification. A PEFC endorsement assures purchasers of wood and paper products that they are buying materials from sustainably managed sources. Sustainable forest management helps to encourage biodiversity and supports wildlife habitats.
The light is finished with a shellac-based button polish. Shellac is an all-natural resin secreted by tiny insects. Regularly harvested, it is an environmentally friendly renewable resource. Unfortunately we can’t guarantee that the glue used in the dillo is formaldehyde free.
PeopleThe Dillo is designed and made in Cornwall by a small UK based design business.
Resources The Dillo uses energy saving bulbs.
TransportationThe plywood used for the Dillo is manufactured in Finland and then shipped to the UK. It is then distributed by road to the builders’ merchant and then to the design business where the product is made. Both are based in Cornwall.
PackagingThe product is packaged in a cardboard box and has a paper instruction sheet. Please reuse or recycle these.
Care instructionsIf cared for properly, the Dillo is sturdy enough to endure as an heirloom piece. No maintenance is required other than the occasional dust and changing of the low energy bulb!
