They may look like they’ve just been popped from a giant bottle of bubbly, but these quirky cork creations are perfect as a side table, ottoman or stool. They’re made from 100% sustainable cork from Portugal and include the odd leftover from the vineyard floor.

Natural cork is an eminently renewable resource. It’s harvested from the living bark of the Cork Oak, Quercus Suber L, in a steady, continuous cycle that promotes healthy growth to the tree over its expected lifespan of over 200 years. Typically, virgin cork is not removed from saplings until their 25th year, and reproduction cork (the first cycle) may not be extracted for another 9-12 years. Cork suitable for wine stoppers is not harvested until the following 9-12 year cycle, which means farmers invest over 40 years before producing natural wine corks. Cork bark is removed from trees in spring or summer when the tree is growing and the new, tender cork cells come away easily. If it appears that the cork is being stripped too early or too late in the season, the process is stopped; a year's delay in cork extraction is preferable to a damaged tree. To make these stools, the cork is heat pressed into shape. The heat brings out the cork’s natural sap which works to binds the pieces together, so no glues are needed.
Resources Some of the cork used is recovered from the waste of the Portuguese wine industry. Cork is recyclable and fully biodegradable.
TransportationThe raw material is sourced in Portugal and the stools are manufactured in the Philippines then distributed from Holland all over the world. All transport is via sea freight.
