More Information

Materials
The Open Fire Dish is made from 100% weathered steel, a special type of outdoor steel with a protective coating of chromium, nickel and copper. This means it rusts on its surface only, forming a protective layer which makes it very hardwearing.

The majority of steel is produced from waste, which helps cut pollution. New steel is made from iron ore, which is mined in open quarries with major environmental implications including the polluting of ground water and damage to local ecosystem. The production of iron can release large amounts of sulpher dioxide and dust, while steel production releases cadium and fluorine compounds into the air and water. This pollution is greatly reduced when steel is produced from a recycled resource.

Steel is inert and does not off gas any substances.

Resources
The Qrater enables the use of wood (a renewable and carbon neutral resource) for outdoor heating rather than gas-fired outdoor heaters. One patio heater can produce almost 4 tonnes of CO2 a year: that's more than one gas-guzzling 4x4 would produce in the same time period and around two-thirds of an average household's total yearly emissions.

The conversion of iron ore to steel is a long series of processes. It has a high primary energy consumption because of the temperatures required to smelt the raw iron ore. Resources of iron ore are rapidly diminishing.

Making steel from scrap consumes far less energy and helps reduce demand for mining virgin iron ore. Approximately 40% of the world’s annual steel production is from scrap steel and 60% from virgin iron ore. In addition to this over 80% of steel that is already in use is recycled.

Large amounts of water are used in the production of steel to cool the smelted iron ore.

Transportation
The Qrater is made in Belgium and transported to the UK by road and sea.

Iron ore is mostly mined in Australia, West Africa, India and Brazil and this means that the transport related emissions of iron ore to Europe are very high.

Packaging
The Qrater is packed in cardboard; please recycle.

Care instructions
A protective layer of rust will develop on the fire dish, which makes it very hardwearing and no maintenance is required.  After 2-5 years, corrosion almost ceases.
All steel can be recycled.
